What are Dental Implants?

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide a long-term treatment plan for people who have lost their natural teeth.

How does it work, you ask?

The process behind Dental Implants is actually quite an interesting one.

Dental Implants work by replacing the root of a single tooth.

A crown is placed on the top of the tooth to blend in with other teeth in size, shape and colour.

The implant is a piece of titanium screw or other material that looks like a screw. Over time the jaw bone grows around the implant, which helps to hold it in place.

Dental Implants can also be used to hold a dental bridge or dentures in place.

When Do You Need A Dental Implant?

  • If you have one or more missing teeth
  • To secure an implant (fake tooth)

A Dental Implant Might Be An Option For You If

  • You have a fully grown, healthy jawbone
  • Don’t have gum disease
  • Don’t have conditions that would affect the bones healing process.

What Happens During A Procedure?

A dental implant procedure is done in stages over a couple of months and is a surgical or invasive procedure in the Australian dental game.

First, your teeth are scanned and/or x-rayed to give a clearer picture of where to start the implant. This will help identify what needs to be done to get your smile looking its very best.

A dental implant is then fitted into the bone graft in surgery. You will be given an anaesthetic so that you don’t feel pain during the surgery. Gradually over the months following the surgery, the bone will grow around the dental implant.

Once the implant is stable, the dentist will take a mould of the tooth to assist in making an artificial tooth. And finally, the artificial tooth is implemented into the foundation.

What Can You Expect After The Procedure

There are a few symptoms you can expect after your procedure is complete.

  • Swelling of the gums and around the facial area
  • Slight pain on the side of the implant
  • Minor bleeding around the implant

It is also highly advisable to eat soft foods until the implant area heals, and follow the directions given to you.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There are many benefits of dental implants, mostly being that they are strong and stable compared to alternative solutions like dentures.

Implants are also built and designed to last forever (while it looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth), making implants a fantastic long-term solution.
